MASCULINE FEMININE (1966)
My favorite Godard movie tells the story of Paul (Jean Pierre-Leaud), an eccentric and obsessive French teenager, seducing Madeleine (Chantal Goya), a teenage French pop ye-ye singer. It’s a hard movie to define. Some of it feels like documentary footage of 60’s french teenagers discussing their philosophical attitudes about love and politics. At other points, it’s a slightly comic romantic melodrama. Then, it can be really political.
I love this movie for the incredibly sexy scenes of these hot french kids having combative conversations. The boys in this movie are constantly attacking the girls, demanding to know personal things. The girls smile and laugh and flirt while the boys get more and more aggressive and crazed. It kills me. Also, it’s full of great 60’s French pop music. It’s crazily hip.
