THREE WOMEN (1977)
Horror melodrama in which an unpopular and pretentious woman (Shelley Duvall) takes under her wing a naive, eccentric new girl at work (Sissy Spacek). But the shy new girl’s personality changes mysteriously and horrifying, nightmarish things start to occur.
This is a seriously creepy movie, I think of as one of the main precursors to the David Lynch nightmare-logic movies I love. This movie feels just like my nightmares. And I love Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek. And Altman’s weird finding-the-story-as-he-goes style works incredibly well here. The movie’s mostly improvised. And it’s really hip. I don’t often like artsy movies, but this is a really cool artsy one.
